Frolics Series 2007 - Results and Standings

Results after Round 5 - 22 July Nonsuch Park (MV)  (Final Round)

SLOW win again!

Winners in 2005, joint winners in 2006, and now first again in 2007. Can nothing stop the SLOW juggernaut?

In the end, the ‘best 4 out of 5 (final event to count)’ rule proved decisive, with SLOW clear winners by 3 points. A home win at their own event (Ham Riverside) and an away win at Nonsuch Park, together with second at Trent Park and third at Shooters Hill was more than enough.

Although counting all five events, MV would have been comfortable winners by 91 to 89, with LOK third on 78. MV’s worst event(s) - fourth at both Bedfords Park and Trent Park - was much better than SLOW’s ninth at Bedfords Park: an interesting example of how to concentrate your winning efforts or just a quirk of the system?

Remarkably, after a forecast of blanket rain throughout, round 4 saw a warm and even sunny day. Trent Park was at its best, with a course that used both the open fields and the interesting bit on the north side (albeit some brambles to go with the interest!).

But on home ground, LOK could manage no better than third place: both HH and SLOW brought in the heavy hitters to take the top two places. (In fact HH had no fewer than 14 of 72 finishers.)

Overall, the top three places stayed the same, except that SLOW and LOK closed the gap a little on this year’s runaway leaders MV. HH were rewarded for their large turnout by moving up several places to fourth.

One should of course never say never in orienteering, where complete disaster is always possible, but MV now look in an almost impregnable position with Nonsuch Park as the final event. But the chasers might still have a gleam of hope since the final championship depends on the best three of the first four events (plus the last). So wait and see until the presentation of the London bus trophy…..

Again having an event on the doorstep,  helped the local clubs - HAVOC and CHIG - towards a hatful of points, but interestingly travel distance was clearly no constraint for the next two positions – CROC and MV. Turnout overall was perhaps a little lower than hoped for, particularly on such a fine July day after all the rain and unseasonable cold weather. But, with several other major sporting events taking place on the same day, the numbers held up remarkably well on balance.

The overall table saw a perhaps decisive step change, with MV’s travelling support helping them to become clear leaders, by five points over second place SLOW. With the MV event at Epsom and Ashtead still to come on July 22 it may now be difficult to catch them. But…. remember the final result is based on best four out of the five events, with event 5 having to count. So, best still to be a little cautious with your spread bets?

See next week’s bulletin as the tension builds…..

As last week, home advantage was decisive, with SLOW coming out as comfortable winners at Ham Riverside. Second place MV no doubt also enjoyed being not far from their home territory. But for a second week, newcomers SO and BKO were again prominent in the results, beating one or two old favourites in the process.

This early in the series, places in the overall table tend to switch around quite dramatically week by week, with some big leaps up the table and corresponding falls.  At the top, SLOW and MV are almost inseparable after two events, but perhaps significantly, these two together with LOK – the 2006 top three - already share the top three places between them this year.

DFOK have slipped down but, reflecting the scoring on the day, BKO and SO have jumped up several places in the table. Will they be able to mount a serious challenge as the series unfolds?

Round 1 saw a pretty good turnout given the rather unkind weather! We had a well-planned Frolics course, combining the open area with some tricky ‘green’ controls, which might have taken some people by surprise.

On home territory, DFOK scooped the maximum 20 points, followed by most of the usual suspects. This year, the list of ‘eligible’ clubs has been expanded, and newcomers BKO and SO were well in the points.

Competition should hot up in the coming weeks – watch this space!
