2001 was the year the South East finally got electronic punching equipment and it was therefore LOK's aim to run its Boxing Day score event with
SportIdent kit. So whilst last year I worried about whether I was going to be able to heat the mulled wine satisfactorily in near zero conditions this
year I had weightier matters to preoccupy me - using SportIdent changes so many aspects, often in quite subtle ways, to the organisation of an event .
It was a great help when Gavin Andrews of SLOW (but a former Lokkie), after a chance remark by myself praising his excellent software at the SLOW score
event on Putney Heath in October, volunteered his services. I think score events show up software to best effect. His set up also seems to be able to
process large quantities of finishers quickly - a bonus on a cold day.
Thanks to Ronan and Julie Cleary who re-surveyed Trent Park a couple of weeks before the event so that a much needed updated map could be used for
the big day.
Organising an event on Boxing Day certainly keeps you focused right up to and through Christmas Day. Many thanks to my brothers Bill and Nick who, in
addition to serving and exercising quality control over the mulled wine, helped me load up my car with all the necessary kit on Christmas Day and
unload it again after the event. Many thanks, also echoed by the controller (Nick Vass), to the other LOK members who turned out on the day to do their
bit and without whom the event could not take place.

Planner's Comments:
It was very gratifying to see a good turnout to our Boxing Day Score event and even more gratifying to receice positive feed back on the course. A
preliminary look at the results indicate that my efforts to try and lead people to take a variety of routes appear to have succeeded. Thanks to a
very recent update of the map by Julie and Ronan Cleary, I was also able to make good use of the more demanding northern part of the area.
My thanks to Nick Vass for controlling the event so effectively and for the help in programming the controls on Christmas Eve. Thanks also on this
occasion to Mrs Galvin for tea and mince pies and to Gavin for his remote troubleshooting then and computer wizardry on the day.
Thanks also to LOK stalwarts who helped bring in the controls, none of which
failed on the day, incidentally, and thanks to all of you for your support in attending.

For what more could one ask? A bright, crisp day, a brisk run and mulled wine to follow. Looking over the results I note that there were almost as many different routes chosen as there were runners in places 1 to 9 which suggests to me that the planner, John Hardy, achieved the aim of having no obvious route round all the controls. Thanks to the organiser, Catherine Galvin, and her band of willing helpers the event started on time, so there was no unnecessary hanging about in the cold, and there was a warm drink for those that wanted one at the end. One or two people said they were unable to find a couple of controls but I can assure them that they were all there before the start and when we collected them at the end. Otherwise, all the comments I heard were positive. One lesson learnt is to make sure that there is no control, not even a demo, anywhere near the Finish/Download area to remove temptation from those who punch everything in sight and thereby confuse the SI system.
